Artificial Intelligence
and Street Art

Please note that the Wall Talk will change location to Hildastraße 5. Furthermore, the mural at Friedrichstrasse 56 could not be painted during the weekend. Check out Instagram and Facebook for further information.

As part of the German Year of Science 2019 on Artificial Intelligence, mural paintings (Wall Art) are being created in public space in collaboration with the Freiburg artists’ collective kulturaggregat e.V.. With this art/science project, we want to bring discussions on AI research and its societal perspective into public spaces and open up a dialog based on the work of street art artists. The paintings and prints are created in an exchange between AI researchers at the University of Freiburg and street art artists. The project is running until december and two artworks can be viewed during the RSS conference already: A large print on one of the trams in Freiburg (Tram Art), and a mural painting at “die Fabrik” (Habsburgerstrasse 3).

Wall Art

With this art/science project, we want to bring discussions on AI research and its societal perspective into public spaces and open up a dialog based on the work of street art artists. In Germany, there is a growing interest to initiate an informed discussion on AI research and enable laypersons and future users to participate. To this end, we want to break new ground in order to make research topics in the fields of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and machine learning more accessible. In our approach, we have chosen street art as the way to start a dialogue. From April to August 2019, five murals will be created in the city centre of Freiburg. They take up the topic of artificial intelligence and depict the research behind it from an artistic perspective.

Tram Art

Street art artists Smy and Fritz Boogie talked to Prof. Dr. Wolfram Burgard about his research and visited his laboratory. Together they developed an AI and robotics inspired print design for one of Freiburg’s trams, that is now circulating on line 4. Their work is called “Ansichtssache” that translates to “point of view”.

From the 1st of June 2019 to 30th of November 2019, the tram with the artwork “Ansichtssache” will run on the tracks of the Freiburger Verkehrs AG. On 21st of June 2019, you will have the opportunity to talk to the scientists and artists about AI research and street art during an event in the “AI tram”. Get on board and discuss with us! Short moderated discussions with Wolfram Burgard and other scientists from computer science and robotics, followed by open question rounds, enable you to learn more about the current state of the art, but also to discuss social aspects of this technology.

The science/art inititative Nexus Experiments of the University of Freiburg and the kulturaggregat e.V. offer the chance to learn, discuss and participate at events on the topic of artificial intelligence in the course of 2019. The campaign was initiated with the additional support of the Robotics Science and Systems Conference.

If you want to participate in the Tram Talks, you can either track the live location of the tram during the event or use the provided schedule. Tracker and schedule can be found here.
